Death of Ken Hirst

BBE is saddened to hear the announcement of the death of our former secretary, Ken Hirst. Grimethorpe Colliery Band said "Ken was associated with the band for 40 years. He was to many people "Mr. Grimethorpe", the way he worked tirelessly for the band was an inspiration to others. When the Colliery was in the process of closing, Ken had only one thought - "The Band must continue to play". A real life Danny from Brassed Off! Everyone in brass banding knew "Ken" - his presence at contests was something to behold - he always spoke his mind and the band and its players always came first. Grimethorpe Colliery Band feels blessed to have had Ken at the helm and fortunate to have had such a long association with him. We will never forget him or his contribution, he has made an indelible mark on the band's history. The band would like to extend its sincere condolences to his wife Maureen and son David." We understand that the funeral will take place on Thursday the 8th of June at Ardsley Crematorium at 2.50pm, followed by a reception at Burntwood Court Hotel.
