Allan Withington is one of Europe’s best and most creative Brass Band conductors, well-known for his intelligent and high-class programme writing. He is ‘infected’ by an unbridled hunger for the transfer of knowledge and learning experiences, gained through a long and extremely varied musical career. Organizing this course is for Allan a moral obligation, and a deep-seated passion to pass on this knowledge to anybody who chooses to listen. He has helped some of the world’s best brass bands to competition success including 7 National Championship of Great Britain wins and has toured the globe, teaching, instructing and just getting involved. Allan is Chief Conductor of Stavanger Brass Band, Carlton Main Frickley Colliery Band and musical advisor for Valaisia Brass Band in Switzerland. Furthermore, he is a member of the much-acclaimed trumpet section of the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra.
2022 After two lean years, the school is finally back, in its rightful place, Leeuwarden in Holland. Over the last 12 years, the school has proved to be a huge source of inspiration and interest for many of the world's band conductors. Covid has taken its toll on the cultural world, but Allan Withington has decided to get back in business and promises, as usual, a challenging and highly interesting residential 6 days in a perfect setting in the north of the country.
Soli Brass, the present Dutch National Champions, together with their musical director Anne van den Berg, will be on hand throughout the week to help and encourage the students and take part in the final gala concert. We look forward to welcoming previous and new students to a fantastic week of musical interaction. Any student with a passion to learn should apply.

Course details:
1) Conducting technique (including individual sessions with Allan Withington)
2) Effective rehearsal and score reading
3) Creative programme planning
4) Problem solving and interaction with two bands and guest lecturers
5) People management and performance psychology
All students will take part in and help to create the final gala concert.
