The Bold as Brass contest returns this month

Tuesday, 7 June, 2022

Join Brass Bands England and The National Coal Mining Museum on Saturday 25 June, as they celebrate the association between brass bands and coal mining with the return of the Bold as Brass Contest.

The six bands performing in the contest are: Bedford Town Band, Dodworth Colliery, Dinnington Colliery, Enderby Concert Band, Enderby Youth Band, and Shirland Miners. Each band will take part in a 6-minute march across the museum site before a 20-minute set.

The audience will have the chance to cast their vote in the People's Choice competition whilst Brass Foundations Education Specialist, Sheila Allen, will adjudicate the entertainment set. Prizes will be awarded to the overall first placed band, most entertaining band, best solo or group feature, plus many more.

The aim of this event is to offer a modern reinvention of the traditional march and hymn contest. The National Coal Mining Museum site lends itself to this with a road that provides ample space for a march without the need to close any public highways. There is also a large outdoor space at the pit head which will provide an amphitheatre with audience seating space.

Fun day out for all the family

In addition to the fantastic music, there will be street food available and the opportunity to see a silk banner - synonymous with mining heritage - being painted. No booking or registering is required, and the National Coal Mining Museum for England will also be open as usual to explore.

Bring the whole family down for what promises to be a fantastic day out!
