Adapt your fundraising for cost of living concerns

Cost of living webinar
Tuesday, 8 August, 2023

Our communities are often full of individuals who appreciate the work of brass bands and actively want to support them. But, in an ongoing cost of living crisis, what can we expect from our supporters, financially? How can we help them to help us? And what are they willing and able to give?

In light of the ongoing cost of living and the far-reaching effects of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have produced a new fundraising training session focusing on effective fundraising strategies for brass bands. The webinar, Fundraising during a cost of living crisis, will be held on Thursday 21 September at 7:00pm via the Zoom webinar platform. It’s free for BBE Members and non-members will be able to register for a £10 fee.

During this session, Beth Lambert, BBE Fundraising Manager, will address the key changes occurring in the fundraising landscape due to the cost of living crisis and the lingering economic impacts of the pandemic. We will explore the challenges faced by brass bands in sustaining their operations and supporting themselves in these turbulent times. Attendees can expect to gain valuable insights into potential solutions and strategies for fundraising.

How is the giving landscape changing?

The pressing need for effective fundraising practices is evident in recent research conducted by the Charities Aid Foundation (CAF). According to a survey conducted by CAF in September 2022, 4.9 million individuals opted not to make one-off donations, and 3.2 million people reduced or ceased regular charitable contributions due to the rising cost of living. The same research revealed that 58% of charity leaders identified generating income and financial stability as one of their top challenges.

Additional findings from the CAF survey underscore the impact of the cost of living crisis on the charitable sector:

  • 86% of charitable organisations are concerned about the effects of cost of living increases on those dependent on their services.
  • 71% of charity leaders expressed concerns regarding the management of increased demand for their services.
  • 59% are apprehensive about a potential decline or lack of new donations due to the cost of living crisis.
  • Over 80% of non-profits anticipate challenges with increased utility costs and wage management.
  • Two-thirds of charity Chief Executives worry about rising prices for stock, supplies, and equipment.
  • Approximately 35% believe their organisations will face significant survival challenges.

Economic challenges on individuals

The general public's sentiment toward charitable giving also reflects the impact of the cost of living crisis. A survey conducted by CAF Bank and YouGov in March revealed that 14% of respondents plan to reduce their charitable donations in the coming year.

The cumulative effect of inflation, rising taxes, and stagnant incomes is placing an increasing burden on households. Fuel prices have seen a significant increase, with an average rise of 12.6p per litre since February 2022. Energy bills have surged by approximately £700 per year, and food prices are predicted to rise by 15% by the end of the year. We also have the increase to the average monthly mortgage payments to consider, with over one million people facing rises of over £500 per month.

These economic challenges exacerbate the financial pressures on charities, who have already suffered during the pandemic. The Resolution Foundation predicts that without support, an additional 1.3 million people will fall into poverty in 2023. Moreover, the charitable sector has experienced a decline in donations, reduced attendance at location-based charities and events, and devaluation of existing funds.

With reduced government funding available due to budget constraints, charities must strive to accomplish more with fewer resources.

How brass bands can and are adapting their fundraising strategies

Armed with the above information, the cost of living webinar will explore new ideas and fundraising options to support your band, as well as offer an opportunity for BBE members to come together and share their own ideas and experiences on the topic. The event will include a Q&A session, providing participants with the opportunity to engage directly with Beth and seek clarification on specific concerns.
