Brass Bands England is proud to recognise individuals and organisations who have made an exceptional contribution to brass banding.

The Brass Bands England Awards exist to give credit to those who have made an exceptional contribution within the banding community and the wider community within which brass bands operate. Be it through leading innovative creative projects, bringing about positive social change, championing inclusion and diversity, or inspiring a new generation of musicians. There is plenty to be recognised and celebrated within our wonderful sector.

From 15 March - 26 May 2021, nominations can be made for the following awards.

 

Brass Bands England Social Impact Award

This award is for a band or banding organisation

This award is for a band or banding organisation that has made a significant positive impact on their local community. The organisation's outreach activities will have formed new connections in their local area and their activities will have brought about benefits for others outside of their band.

Here are some examples of the kind of information we are looking for. We are looking for nominations that can demonstrate some (but not necessarily all) of the following:

  • Consultation with the local community to establish benefits of engagement
  • Connections have been made with new audiences and/or new players, or successful new community partnerships made
  • Impact of engagement with the community can be demonstrated
  • Enagement with the community has lead to a diversifying of audiences
     

Brass Bands England Innovation Award

This award is for either an individual or a band or banding organisation.

This award is for an outstanding organisation or individual that is propelling brass banding into the future through great innovative, inclusive and imaginative ways of working that can be widely replicated.

Here are some examples of the kind of information we are looking for. We are looking for nominations that can demonstrate some (but not necessarily all) of the following:

  • Projects, campaigns or ways of working that are both original and creative. Concepts could be brand new or improvements or extensions to existing ideas and principles
  • Successful practical application of innovative ideas
  • Appeal of activity to both musicians and a wider audience, with potential to reach new ones
  • Demonstable positive impact of new opportunities on the banding community
  • Potential for innovation to be adopted more widely, across a diverse range of banding groups

 

Brass Bands England Outstanding Contribution Award (18 and under)

This award is for an individual under the age of 18 who is a member of or affiliated to a banding organisation.

This award is for a young person who has made an outstanding contribution to a band, whether that's musically, operationally or through community engagement. It could be someone who has shaped your banding experience for the better, or someone who has shown great commitment and dedication or overcome great challenges, personal or otherwise, to make a positive contribution to banding.

Here are some examples of the kind of information we are looking for. We are looking for nominations that can demonstrate some (but not necessarily all) of the following:

  • A young person who has shown an outstanding commitment to their organisation and its members
  • Demonstrably positive impact on their band as a whole
  • Specific examples of conquering challenges/overcoming adversity and going above and beyond for their band
     

Brass Bands England Outstanding Contribution Award (over 18s)

This award is for an individual who is a member of or affiliated to a banding organisation.

This award is for someone who has made an outstanding contribution to a band, whether that's musically, operationally or through community engagement. It could be someone who has shaped your banding experience for the better, or someone who has shown great commitment and dedication or overcome great challenges, personal or otherwise, to make a positive contribution to banding.

Here are some examples of the kind of information we are looking for. We are looking for nominations that can demonstrate some  (but not necessarily all) of the following:

  • Outstanding commitment to the organisation and its members
  • Demonstrably positive impact on their band as a whole
  • Specific examples of conquering challenges/overcoming adversity and going above and beyond for their band

 

Brass Bands England Lifetime Achievement Award

This award is for an individual.

This award is for an inspiring individual who has made a significant influence and sustained positive contribution to the brass band culture at a national or international level over the course of their lifetime. This will have involved huge personal engagement, commitment, and influence, resulting in a lasting legacy or positive impact on banding.

Here are some examples of the kind of information we are looking for. We are looking for nominations that can demonstrate some (but not necessarily all) of the following:

  • A lengthy timespan of service within the brass band community
  • Scale of impact has reached national or international level
  • Influence has gained momentum and driven positive change within banding culture
  • Ideas have made a lasting impact with a demonstrable legacy
     

Brian W Hicks Memorial Shield for Services to Youth

This award is for an individual.

The winner of this award will have made a monumental contribution and positive impact on youth activity within the banding sector. This will be demonstrated through their own personal commitment and dedication to young people's engagement with brass bands. Their activities will have been far-reaching and inclusive.

Here are some examples of the kind of information we are looking for. We are looking for nominations that can demonstrate some of the following:

  • A lengthy timespan of service to youth work within the brass band community
  • Scale of impact and influence has been substantial
  • Level of personal engagement and commitment has gone above and beyond inital expectations
  • Ideas have made a lasting impact with a demonstrable legacy on youth banding

Who can make a nomination or be nominated?

Awards will be granted to either individuals, or to bands and banding organisations, who have been nominated by others.

  • Individuals cannot nominate themselves or their own band/organisation
  • Membership of BBE is not a requirement for either the nominator or the nominee
  • These awards are open to all and not restricted to residents of England. However, the awards will be judged on the activities and benefits recognised within England
  • Persons of any age may be nominated except where specifically shown
  • Bands/organisations may include wind bands and other band formations that have a significant brass section
  • Previous winners of the Lifetime Achievement Award and the Brian W Hicks Memorial Shield will not be eligible for the same award again.
  • The name of the nominator(s) will not be revealed to the nominee or anyone else outside of the judging panel
  • Nominations made by BBE Trustees of staff cannot be accepted

 

Closing Date

The deadline for entries is midnight on Wednesday 26 May 2021. Due to the judging timeline we will unfortunately not be able to accept entries past this deadline.

 

Judging Panel

The awarding panel will comprise a group of experts from the brass banding sector, drawn from BBE trustees.

 

Announcement of the winners

Winners will be announced at the Brass Band Conference, which this year will be held on Saturday 25 September 2021. Further details of this will be announced in June.

Each winner will be presented with their own Brass Bands England Awards plaque to mark their achievements.

The winner of the Brian W Hicks Memorial Shield for Services to Youth will retain the shield for 1 year, as well as receiving a BBE plaque.
