Meet the BBCA Area Reps

The BBCA has six area representatives that can be contacted by email regarding conducting-related matters in your region:


London & Southern Counties

Alan Duguid

Alan is a conductor, composer, adjudicator and teacher based in Enfield, North London. He has worked with a range of bands across all sections in the UK and overseas, including Kingdom Brass, Tokyo Brass Concord, Aarhus Brass Band, Regent Brass, Redbridge Brass and the Aveley and Newham Brass Band. He currently works regularly as the MD of the Enfield Brass Band and City of London Symphonic Winds.





Tom Hancock

Tom Hancock is a freelance conductor and brass tutor, working predominantly in Staffordshire and Cheshire. He is currently Musical Director of Audley Brass (2nd Section) and Lions Junior Brass.





David Thornton


David is musical director of Grimethorpe Colliery Band, Senior Tutor in Brass Bands at the RNCM, a performing artist for Sterling Musical Instruments and a BBE trustee. He is regarded as one of the foremost euphonium players and teachers of his generation and has a global reputation as a performer and clinician.




Stuart Black



Stuart Black is a Salford Uni alumni now living back in the Scottish Borders working as a conductor and brass teacher, most predominantly with Hawick Saxhorn band, Galashiels Town Band, various youth bands and Horn Tutor of the National Children’s Band of Scotland.




South West


John Fricker

(interim appointment)

John Fricker, Vice-Chairman of the BBCA, started conducting as a member of Kingswood Salvation Army (SA), and was the MD of Bristol Veterans Brass for about eight years before standing down in 2018.  John conducts Kingswood SA Fellowship Band, and is the assistant conductor for Filton Concert Brass Community Band. He also does occasional guest conducting and is involved teaching learners at Bristol Easton SA.  





Geraint Barnes


Geraint Barnes is the conductor of the 4th Section Newbridge Celynen Brass Band as well as the Ricky Hunter Big Band.




Brendan Breslin


Brendan Breslin is the Head of Connect for the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Ireland's leading conservatory. He is the course supervisor of the eCourse in Music Ensemble Direction, and project manager of RIAM Ensemble Fest. Prior to joining RIAM he performed as a member of the Band of An Garda Síochána, and is the Artistic Director of the Irish Youth Brass Band, Irish Film & Pops Orchestra, and the Dublin Concert Band. Brendan is a former winner of the NABBC Conducting competition in 2016, as well as a prize-winning composer and arranger.
