Location
John Davis was educated and grew up in the Derbyshire village of South Normanton; where he still works today, as a Director in his family funeral business.
His first exposure to brass bands was on tenor horn in his school band under the guidance of headmaster Trevor Bellemy. John then went on to become a trumpet player in local orchestras and dance bands. John is also an organist.
John has spent 35 years successfully conducting many bands throughout the country.
It was in 1990 that John accepted the position of MD with The Riddings Band, and he remained with them for 15 years, guiding them into the Championship section after 10 years.
He joined Dronfield Band in January 2009, and made an immediate impact, taking them to the National finals, the first time in the band’s history, where they finished in 2nd place. The band were also promoted from the 4th to the second section in 4 years under John’s guidance.
He is constantly in demand as a conductor, and has composed & arranged many pieces. His work is regularly performed in the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand .
John is currently the adjudicator at the Whit Friday march contests in the village of Carrbrook. A position he has held for over the past 15 years.
John has also worked with many bands in the Midlands, Yorkshire & Lancashire areas, such as Newstead, Thoresby, Derwent, Foss Dyke, Unite the Union Band Eccles Borough & many others. John is currently the MD of Oddfellow Brass in Leicestershire.
In his spare time John enjoys TaeKwon-Do, and is ranked as a 4th Dan Black Belt & is the Secretary of the Brass Band Conductors' Association.
