Proms in the Playground - find out more about that and other events
Friday, 6 May, 2022

Summer is fast approaching, and with it comes big events in our calendar. Our Brass Foundations led #PromsInThePlayground returns to schools this July, and you can still register to get involved. Before that, the free Bold as Brass contest returns to the National Coal Mining Museum for England on Saturday 25 June, a music-filled day perfect for all the family!

Conducting Competition live final

The Brass Band Conductors' Association is delighted to be holding its annual Conducting Competition final live at Eccles Town Hall in Greater Manchester on Saturday 18 June.

In addition to the live final there will also be a Gala Concert, which will feature the six finalists conducting the Eccles Borough Band before the band perform their own programme. This will be followed by the announcement of the 2022 winner and prize-giving ceremony.

The whole event is free, but we ask that you register in order to be notified of any changes.

Bold as Brass

Come celebrate the association between brass bands and coal mining with the return of the Bold as Brass Contest. 12 bands will perform over the course of the free event, taking part in a 6-minute march across the museum site before a 20-minute set. You, the audience, will have the chance to cast your vote in the People's Choice competition!

In addition to the fantastic music, there will be street food available and the opportunity to see a silk banner - synonymous with mining heritage - painted. No booking or registering is required, so bring the whole family down to the National Coal Mining Museum for England for what promises to be a fantastic day out!

Selecting Music for Beginner Bands

During the European Brass Band Festival, we heard from so many people who are in the process of beginning youth bands. If you’re one of them, join our Brass Foundations Team for a skillshare drop-in session about selecting music for beginner players.

As well as the team sharing their favourite resources, books and pieces there will be ample opportunity for attendees to discuss their successes and challenges in selecting music for beginner players.

#PromsInThePlayground

From 4 - 22 July Brass Bands England (BBE) wants your help in making sure that across the country, school playgrounds are filled with MUSIC! BBE are encouraging community bands to connect with their local schools by offering a performance in their playground, aka #PromsInThePlayground. As well as getting young people excited about brass banding, this initiative will help bands forge and strengthen relationships with organisations around them.

If you're a school that wants to find a band in your area, or if you have any questions about Proms in The Playground please contact BBE’s Education and Development Manager Sarah Baumann on sarah@bbe.org.uk, or your local Youth Development Brass Specialist.
