The Carnival of Venice arr J.B Arban - Wynton Marsalis / Eastman Wind Ensemble

J.B Arban was a French cornettist at the time that the cornet was being developed in the middle of the 1800s. He wrote a book of exercises and solos called The Cornet Method, which most brass players still have in their collections.

Wynton Marsalis is a American Jazz trumpet player and educator. During his early playing career, Marsalis ‘dabbled’ in a wide range of musical styles and released albums of classical trumpet playing and this album, “Carnaval” which showcases the tradition of the Air and Variations. These often-virtuosic pieces were written to demonstrate a player’s technical ability, taking a simple melody and applying various playing techniques as the piece progresses, getting more and difficult as it goes through.

Marsalis’ performance of The Carnival of Venice from his album Carnaval, gives the listener an amazing rendition of this famous solo.
