Tom Hancock

Tom Hancock was born in Stoke-on-Trent in 1988 and began playing Cornet aged 8 with the award-winning Lions Youth Brass organisation. Tom went on to be Principal Cornet of Lions (2006 - 2008) and later Junior Band MD (2011 - 2022); leading an exciting project to reinvent the ‘Juniors’ and ultimately win the National Youth Championships. This was achieved in 2022 after several near-misses.

Tom was a member of Roberts Bakery Band from 2004 - 2018, enjoying successful overseas tours and winning three Area titles. Tom also went on to hold the positions of Band Manager and Associate Conductor.

Tom became Musical Director of Audley Brass in 2014, a time when the band had just 14 regular players and was languishing in the Fourth Section. Less than 2 years later, the band had doubled in membership and by 2022 were on the brink of promotion to the First Section.

Tom completed a History degree from Staffordshire University in 2009 followed by a Masters from the University of Manchester in 2010. His theses focused on the changing nature of British brass bands and their relationship to industry & the working-class. Tom is in-demand as a private brass tutor and freelance conductor.
